My uncle told me to always use a string line for post holes, even on a short run.

I was putting up a 20 foot section of privacy fence in my own backyard and thought I could eyeball it to save ten minutes. The third post was off by almost two inches, and I had to pull it and reset it, which cost me an hour. How many of you still use a string line for every single job, no matter how small?

My buddy Jake skipped the string for a three post mailbox job last fall. His mailbox ended up leaning like a drunk sailor after a frost heave.

My cousin in Michigan had that exact thing happen with his mailbox posts last winter. You can set them perfect in October and then the ground just pushes them all out of line by March. Makes you wonder if it's even worth trying to get them perfectly straight when you put them in. I feel like you almost have to plan for the lean.
