My first boss told me to never refrigerate roses with lilies, but after a $300 Valentine's Day order wilted overnight, I learned the ethylene gas from the lilies really does speed up the rose decay.

Has anyone found a good way to store mixed bouquets when you're tight on cooler space, or do you just keep them completely separate?

Ugh, that ethylene gas is brutal. When my cooler's packed, I put lilies in a tall vase with a bit of water and keep them on a high shelf away from everything else. Roses and other sensitive stuff stay in the cooler. If I absolutely have to mix them for a short time, I make sure the lilies aren't shedding pollen and crack the cooler door for extra air flow. It's not perfect, but it's saved a few orders.

Ever think about using those little ethylene absorber packets? I saw a big grower using them in their lily boxes once. Your trick with the tall vase is smart, it probably keeps the gas from sinking down onto other flowers. I've even heard some people will put a small fan in the cooler just to keep the air moving around, but that seems like a lot.

Man, that's just like how one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.
