Unpopular opinion: I chose my great aunt's handwritten recipe over a popular online version
I was making her Hungarian mushroom soup and had to pick between her faded card that called for a full cup of sour cream or a modern blog recipe that used half that. I went with her version, and it was way richer and creamier, just like I remembered from childhood. The online one I tried last year was too thin and tart. Has anyone else had a family recipe that seemed 'wrong' by today's standards but was totally right?

That "full cup of sour cream" thing is why old recipes taste like memory.

Found the same thing with my grandma's coffee cake recipe. It calls for a whole stick of butter just in the crumb topping. You can't get that same rich, crumbly texture with a "healthy" swap. That kind of recipe just makes the whole kitchen smell like a Sunday morning.

Exactly. Those recipes were not afraid of flavor.
