I just found my old sketchbooks from art school and wow, my color choices were wild
Back then, I'd just pick colors I liked without thinking much. Now, I always start with a quick mood board on Pinterest to see what feels right. The change happened about two years ago when a client said my first draft looked 'too loud' for their brand. It made me realize I needed a better system. How do you guys usually find your color direction for a new project?

Actually, going straight to mood boards can kill the fun. All those curated images just make everything look the same after a while. My best color combos still come from just messing around, like mixing that weird mustard yellow from my kid's paint set with a deep blue. Following a system too hard makes work feel safe and boring. Sometimes a client saying something is "too loud" just means they have no vision.

Remember when I spilled coffee on a half-finished watercolor. The brown stain mixed with the blues and pinks actually looked amazing, so I just went with it. Sometimes the best ideas come from total accidents.

Totally, my best painting came from my toddler smearing purple where I didn't plan it. Happy accidents are the best.
