PSA: I thought the whole 'brutalism' trend in web design was just ugly and over...

I saw a portfolio site for a studio in Berlin that used it, and the way they mixed those big, blocky fonts with soft pastel colors actually worked. It made the text feel really strong but still easy to look at for a long time. Has anyone else found a way to make that harsh style feel more friendly?

Exactly, that's the whole trick. You can't just leave the concrete bare. The pastels are like that cozy sweater, they wrap the hard edges in something soft. It stops the design from feeling cold or like a government website from 1998. You gotta balance the brutal with something human, otherwise it's just a pain to look at.

Yeah, it's like putting a cozy sweater on a concrete building.

Until the sweater gets wet and moldy.
