Just watched Donnie Darko again and the tangent universe theory still bugs me

I was at a friend's house last weekend and we threw on Donnie Darko for a rewatch. This was my 4th time seeing it and I still can't figure out the whole tangent universe thing. Like the movie sets up all these rules about how the universe branches off and needs to be fixed, but then the ending just resets everything anyway. So what was the point of all the time travel and Frank the rabbit stuff if it all gets undone? My buddy tried to explain it as a closed loop but that doesn't hold up either because Donnie clearly changes things by the end. I feel like the movie has a rulebook that even the director ignored halfway through. Has anyone else actually mapped out the timeline of this movie and made it make sense?

Stopped trying to make the timeline add up and just let the rabbit be a weird metaphor. It clicked way more when I focused on the mood and the characters instead.

Nah you're overthinking it. The point is the characters, not the rules.
