My buddy swore Mulholland Drive made sense if you watch it backwards, so I tried it
He said the timeline reverses at the 45-minute mark and I spent 3 hours pausing and rewinding until I gave up, has anyone actually cracked that movie's plot or is it just random?

That whole "watch it backwards" thing is just a joke people tell to mess with new viewers... Mulholland Drive isn't meant to be solved like a puzzle with a right answer. The movie works more like a dream, you know? Things shift and change and characters merge because that's how your brain processes emotions when you're asleep. Did you catch how the first half feels like a fairy tale and the second half turns into a nightmare version of the same story? The real question is what feeling did you get from the blue box scene... because I think that's where Lynch wants you to stop trying to make linear sense and just let it wash over you.

Respectfully, "let it wash over you" feels like a cop out for lazy storytelling.
