The argument over cleaning mouse pads with soap vs just water

Honestly, I had my Artisan Hien for about 8 months and it got this gross oily spot right where my wrist sits. I tried wiping it with just a damp cloth, no luck. So I used a tiny drop of dish soap and a soft sponge, and it cleaned right up. But my buddy Cole swears that soap ruins the surface texture over time and says you should only use warm water and air dry. I get his point, soap might strip some coating, but plain water didn't do anything. My Hien still feels fine a month later, no peeling or rough spots. What do you all think, has anyone had a pad get wrecked from using soap?

Start by saying that using dish soap might not be as harmless as you think. I had a similar thing happen with my old QcK+ where I used a tiny bit of Dawn on a stubborn spot, and after about three months the surface started feeling kind of rough and worn down where I scrubbed. Your buddy Cole's right that some pads have a coating that soap can slowly eat away, even if it looks fine at first. The Hien's a bit different because it's a hybrid weave, not a coated cloth, so soap might not hurt it as much. But with coated pads, gentle water and a microfiber cloth is usually safer, even if it takes a couple tries to get the stain out. Just something to keep in mind if you ever switch to a different pad.
