Dropped $60 on a used copy of TimeSplitters 2 and it totally backfired

Found it at a garage sale last weekend, guy swore it worked fine. Got home, popped it in my PS2, and the disc skips on the second level every single time. Tried cleaning it with toothpaste and a cloth, no luck. Now I'm stuck with a paperweight and a wasted Saturday afternoon. Anyone got a cheap fix for scratched discs that actually works?

Used to think the whole "buyer beware" thing was just people being harsh, but after watching my brother drop $80 on a scratched Halo 2 from a pawn shop I kind of get it now. He didn't test it either, just handed over the cash and walked out. When I tried to defend him saying it wasn't his fault the disc was bad, the guy at the counter just shrugged and pointed to a sign that said all sales final. That garage sale dude probably knew it skipped and figured he could offload it on someone. Sucks you're out the money and the time, but at least next time you'll plug it in and test it before handing over the cash.
