Tried using a 90s VCR to digitize old home movies and got a surprise

I figured my old Panasonic VCR would just play tapes fine, but the tracking was way off and added this weird rolling bar I never saw on the CRT. Ended up learning I need a TBC (time base corrector) to clean it up, which I didn't even know existed. Has anyone else run into this with older decks?

Oh man, I feel your pain! I went through the exact same thing with my old JVC deck a few years back, thought it was broken until I read up on TBCs. Running the signal through a basic external TBC totally killed that rolling bar and made the picture stable enough to capture without tearing my hair out.

I heard somewhere that some old VCRs have a built in TBC that's actually pretty decent, but you gotta dig through the service menu to turn it on. My buddy was telling me about his Panasonic deck that had one hidden away, he said it made a world of difference for his old concert tapes. Makes me wonder if there's more of that kind of stuff lurking in these units that nobody really talks about. Might be worth checking your JVC's manual or hitting up some old forum posts before you go buying extra gear.
