My sister told me to stop overwatering my snake plant, I ignored her for 6 months

Last year my sister visited and saw my snake plant looking kinda soft and yellow. She said 'you're drowning that thing, water it like once a month tops'. I thought she was crazy because the internet said every two weeks. Six months later the roots were basically mush and I had to throw the whole plant away lol. Has anyone else had a family member give super simple advice that ended up being way more accurate than all the online guides?

...and that exact thing happened to me but with my mom and my pothos plant. She told me to just stick my finger in the soil before watering. Online guides had me on this rigid schedule, but once I started actually checking the dirt instead of the calendar, the plant went from droopy mess to thriving vine machine.

Nah, following a schedule works FINE if you actually write it down.
