Replacing a $12 air filter took me 3 trips to the hardware store

On Saturday I went to grab a basic 20x20x1 filter for my HVAC unit. The first store only had the 2-inch thick ones, second store was out of stock, and the third one finally had the right size but it was the expensive charcoal kind. Has anyone else had a simple errand turn into a whole morning hunt?

What worked for me was measuring the filter size before heading out and then calling ahead to the stores. Most hardware stores will check their stock over the phone if you ask nicely. After one wasted morning, I also started keeping an extra filter in the garage so I never had to make that trip in a hurry. It saves a lot of headache when the old one looks rough.
