TIL watching cargo planes is way more fun than passenger jets

Always thought cargo was boring until I spent 2 hours at Anchorage airport last month watching FedEx MD-11s come in from Asia. Those old tri-jet roars are something else. Anyone else have a favorite cargo route to spot?

Right? It's like finding the secret menu of aviation. There's something honest about watching planes that are purely there to work, not to impress anyone with nice seats or free drinks. Makes you realize the stuff we take for granted like overnight shipping or fresh fruit in winter is all from these grizzled old workhorses.

Gotta push back just a little on the fresh fruit in winter thing. Most of that stuff comes in on container ships, not cargo planes. Air freight is mostly for high value stuff like electronics, flowers, and emergency medical supplies. The fruit you see at the grocery store in January probably took a slow boat from Chile or New Zealand, not a quick flight. But you're totally right that those old cargo planes are the unsung heroes of everything we need urgently.
