Warning: That guy at the gate told me wrong about lens filters for spotting
Met a fellow spotter at LAX last month who swore by a UV filter for protecting your glass. I slapped one on my 70-200 and went to shoot the 747 departures. Every single shot came back hazy and soft, especially in the afternoon sun. Took it off halfway through and suddenly got crystal clear frames. Has anyone else had trouble with cheap filters messing up their shots on bright days?

Yeah I had the exact same problem with a cheap filter on my 100-400. Switched to a B+W UV filter and it made a huge difference. The cheap ones just add glare and kill your contrast.

B+W makes great filters but UV filters are mostly pointless on digital sensors since they already block UV light.
