Rant: That moment my '79 F-150 lost brakes at a light in downtown Austin
I was coasting to a stop on Congress Ave when the pedal went straight to the floor - turned out a brake line rusted through right at the fitting. I ended up using the e-brake to stop and had to patch it with a compression fitting and some spare line from a junked Chevy. Has anyone else had to jury-rig brake lines on the side of a busy street, or was that just my dumb luck?

That exact same thing happened to me in my '75 F-250 going down a hill in San Antonio. Pedal just went dead and I had to manhandle that heavy truck with the e-brake to get stopped before the intersection. Those old Ford brake lines are notorious for rusting out right at the frame clips where moisture gets trapped. I ended up doing a similar field repair with a double flare tool from a buddy's toolbox and some line I had in the bed. It worked well enough to get me home, but I replaced the whole run the next weekend because I didn't trust a compression fitting to hold long term on a fluid that important. The real trouble was getting all the air out of the system after patching it on the side of the road with no help.

Well, ain't that the truth. It's funny how a problem like that makes you realize how much we take simple things for granted until they go wrong at the worst possible moment. I've noticed that pattern in all sorts of areas - cars, plumbing, even relationships - where the quiet failures are the ones that catch you off guard. You just get used to things working right until the day they don't, and then you're scrambling to fix it with whatever you've got on hand.
