Unpopular opinion: foam panels are overrated for bedroom studios

I went to a friend's setup last week and his room sounded way better with just thick blankets and a carpet than my $150 foam panel grid. Are we all just buying into the look instead of what actually works for weird shaped rooms like my 10x12 box?

Does anyone actually sit in there analyzing the foam pattern on the wall, or are we just hoping it looks like a studio?

My last batch of foam panels I sat there for a solid hour trying to make the pattern look like a galaxy. Ended up with something that looks like a blobfish in a spaceship. Pretty sure my neighbors think I'm running some weird science experiment with all the rearranging. At this point I'm just hoping the foam absorbs words better than it absorbs my dignity.
