Heard someone say SSDI denials are just a first step, not the end

I was at the bus stop last week and overheard a guy talking on the phone. He said his first application got denied in 3 months flat. Said he almost gave up right there. But his brother pushed him to get a lawyer who specialized in disability cases. He got approved after a hearing 8 months later. That stuck with me because I just got my denial letter yesterday. I was ready to toss the whole thing. Now I'm wondering how many people miss out because they don't appeal the first time. Has anyone here gone through the appeal process and actually gotten a different result?
