My uncle swore by WD-40 for cleaning old tools, but I'm pretty sure he ruined my grandfather's hand plane

He said just spray it on everything rusty and wipe it down. Now the patina is gone and the blade feels weirdly slick three years later. Would a different method have saved the original finish, or am I overthinking this whole thing?

Handled a 1910s Disston saw the same way when I was younger and still kick myself for it. A little mineral oil and elbow grease would have kept the original look and feel way better than that spray can ever did.

Yeah people just rush to fix things instead of taking care of them properly.
