Unpopular opinion: old tool collections belong in museums, not garages
Talked to my uncle last weekend after clearing out his basement for him. He had like 40 hand planes from the 1940s just sitting in a rusted metal cabinet (you know, the kind that squeaks when you open it). I asked him why he didn't just toss them and he got all defensive, said they're "craftsmanship history." But here's the thing - none of them are usable. The blades are pitted, the handles are cracked, and they take up half his garage. He's spent maybe 15 years just moving them from one shelf to another. I get that vintage tools look cool on a wall, but at some point you're just hoarding museum pieces that nobody asked for. Has anyone else dealt with a relative who won't let go of broken antique stuff?

Kind of feels like you're making a bigger deal out of this than it really is. They're just old tools in a cabinet, not hurting anyone. Sure they're rusty and useless but maybe your uncle just likes having them around because they remind him of his dad or something. You're talking about them like they're taking over the whole house and causing serious problems. Let the guy keep his broken planes if they make him happy. Not everything needs to be practical or useful to have value.
