Beware of refurbished SSDs from no-name sellers on eBay

I picked up a 1TB SSD for $35 from a seller called TechDealsOutlet and it died after only 3 months. Lost about 80GB of project files because I got lazy with backups. Anyone else had bad luck with these cheap drives from random sellers overseas?

Did you check if the drive had a Phison or Realtek controller? Those no-name ones usually have garbage controllers that fake their SMART data.

The SM2259XT controllers are the worst offenders in those cheap drives I've seen. They'll show 100% health in CrystalDiskInfo right up until the drive completely dies. I've had three of those things fail in external enclosures within six months, and every single one showed "good" SMART data the day before it stopped working. The Phison S11 at least has some level of honesty about its failure states.
