Got told by a crusty old dealer at the record swap that my needle was tracking too heavy... cost me $15 for a scale and saved a bunch of $5 records from sounding worn out

Last month at the monthly swap in Portland this guy in his 70s named Bob overheard me complaining about surface noise on a copy of Rumours I found for $3 at a garage sale. He grabbed my arm and said "son you're grinding those grooves flat" and handed me a cheap stylus pressure gauge. I went home and checked my turntable was set to 4.5 grams instead of the recommended 2. So now I got a $15 digital scale off Amazon and every record sounds way cleaner. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a show give advice that actually saved them money?

Funny how the best advice always comes from someone who has zero reason to help you out.
