Shoutout to the volunteer who labeled the weeds at the city park

I was walking through Miller Park last weekend and saw little signs stuck in the ground next to what most people call weeds. One said 'Broadleaf Plantain, a useful medicinal herb'. It was just a simple laminated card on a stick, but it totally changed how I saw that patch of grass. Now I'm looking at common yard plants in a whole new way. Has anyone else found a cool, simple way to learn about local plants in public spaces?

Question about spending $300 on a faraday cage bag for my phone

Everyone told me it was paranoid nonsense, but after my phone rebooted itself twice during a weird outage near a government building last month, I'm starting to think the $300 was worth it for the peace of mind, or am I just seeing patterns where there aren't any?

My cooler's thermostat gave out during a big wedding weekend

It happened on a Friday night, right before I had to pack up three separate bridal party bouquets. I walked into the shop and the air felt warm, then I saw the digital readout flashing 'Err'. All my peonies and ranunculus for the Saturday wedding were already in there, about $400 worth of blooms. I had to think fast. I moved everything into my van, cranked the AC, and drove to the nearest big box store 20 minutes before closing to buy a standalone thermometer and a bunch of those blue ice packs. I lined coolers with them and kept checking the temp every two hours through the night. Has anyone found a reliable brand for cooler thermostats, or a good alarm system that texts you if the temp drops?

My client's grandma told me her 1950s kitchen cabinets were built with just a hand saw and a dream.

She said they used pine from a local mill in Boise and the doors are still square after 70 years, which makes me rethink my whole 'need the perfect tool for every cut' mentality, so what's the oldest set of cabinets you've worked on that still held up?

Question about a weird sensor reading in a 1920s brick house

Honestly, I installed a standard glass break sensor in a client's old brick house last Tuesday and it kept going off for no clear reason. I finally figured out the high ceilings and plaster walls were making a weird echo that tricked it. Has anyone else had this happen and what did you switch to?

Trying to get my old binoculars to work for Jupiter's moons took me three nights

I dug out my dad's old 10x50 binoculars from the garage to try and spot Jupiter's Galilean moons. The view was just a blurry mess for hours. I spent the first night cleaning lenses, the second trying to steady them on a tripod adapter that didn't fit, and finally on the third night I realized the main focus wheel was completely stuck. A tiny drop of sewing machine oil and 20 minutes of gentle work got it moving. Has anyone else had an old piece of gear fight them this hard on a simple project?
