Lost a whole day's pay on a cheap mortar mixer that died after 3 hours

Honestly, I grabbed a no-name mixer from a discount tool place for $180 thinking I'd save some cash. Tbh, it started smoking on the third batch of mortar for a garden wall job. Had to shut down, send my laborer to rent a proper one, and lost about $400 in wages for the day waiting. The rental cost another $75 on top of that. Ngl, I should have just bought a decent used one from the start. Anyone got a solid brand for a small mixer that can handle daily use?

I was looking up the original cover art for 'The Great Gatsby' and found out something wild

Our club just finished the book, and someone asked about the first edition. I got curious and looked it up online. Turns out, the famous face on the original cover was based on a real person, a painter named Francis Cugat, and he got paid $100 for it in 1925. That blew my mind... a hundred bucks for one of the most famous book covers ever. It made me wonder how much other classic cover artists got for their work. Has anyone else stumbled on a weird fact about a book's history that changed how you saw it?

Tried a new boning knife against my old one for a full side of beef

My old 6-inch Dexter felt fine, but this new 5-inch Victorinox just glided through the seams and saved me maybe 20 minutes on the whole breakdown. The thinner blade and different handle angle made a huge difference for getting around the ribs and pelvis cleanly. Anyone have a favorite boning knife brand for pork shoulders?

My water filter clogged solid on day two of the Teton Crest Trail

I was filtering from a silty stream near Marion Lake and the ceramic element just stopped passing anything after maybe 20 liters. Ended up having to boil everything for the next 36 hours until I got to a ranger station. What's a better backup plan than just carrying iodine tabs?
