A retired molder told me something I still think about every time I pour

I met an old timer named Frank at a trade show in Cleveland about five years ago. He watched me set up a flask and said, 'Kid, you're rushing the ram-up. The sand needs to breathe before it sees the iron.' He showed me his method, which added maybe two minutes to the job. I've argued with guys who say that extra time kills production, but Frank's castings had almost zero gas holes. Do you slow down your prep for a better finish, or is speed more important on the floor?

My uncle told me to skip the switchbacks on a trail in the Sierras to save time

He said it was a local shortcut, but it just led to a steep, loose scree slope that was super sketchy. I ended up wasting more time and energy backtracking than if I'd just stayed on the main trail. Anyone else been given 'shortcut' advice that backfired?

My brother-in-law, who's a plumber, saw my cable clips and asked why I didn't just use his PEX mounting plates.

He was helping me redo a laundry room in his house in Tacoma and pointed at my bundle of coax. He said, 'Those little plastic things always break on me. I use these metal plates for pipe, they're like two bucks each and you can screw them anywhere.' It got me thinking about all the times I've had to re-run a line because a clip snapped in a hot attic. Has anyone else tried using plumbing hardware for low-voltage runs?

I finally got the hang of fitting a 1911 slide to a frame after messing it up twice

First two tries, I was taking off way too much metal, like .005" each pass, and the slide would just rattle. Watched an old timer at a shop in Tulsa do it and he barely touched the rails, maybe .001" at a time, checking fit every single pass. I switched to that method and got a perfect, smooth fit on the third frame. The whole process went from a 3 hour headache to about 45 minutes of careful work. Anyone got a better jig they like for this, or is hand-fitting still the only real way?

Rant: I thought those plastic corner blocks for brick corners were a total gimmick.

Used them on a tricky 45 degree corner in a Denver backyard and they saved me probably an hour of fussing with the line. Anyone have a cheaper alternative that works just as well?

I figured those portable laptop stands were just extra junk to carry.

My neck started killing me after a 4-hour session at a cafe in Seattle, so I borrowed a friend's Roost stand. The difference in posture was immediate and I haven't had a headache since. What's one piece of gear you thought was silly but now swear by?
