Our furnace went out in -35 weather last January, and I'm still picking sides on emergency repairs vs. preventative maintenance
Last January during that big cold snap, our furnace just quit at 2 in the morning. House dropped to 10 degrees inside by the time I got it looked at. The repair guy said our heat exchanger had a hairline crack that we probably missed for months. I ended up paying $1200 for a rush emergency repair from a guy who came out at 3am. But now my neighbor keeps telling me I shoulda just bought a $400 maintenance plan and had it inspected every fall. To me though, even with inspections stuff breaks when it breaks. Has anyone else argued this with themselves after a big repair bill?

My buddy Dave had his water heater blow out in the middle of a family Christmas dinner a few years back, flood in the basement and everything. He had a maintenance plan too, paid for yearly inspections, and the damn thing still gave out with no warning signs. So in my book you can't win no matter which way you go, just gotta hope the luck holds.

Wait wait wait, the water heater blew out DURING Christmas dinner? Like in the middle of carving the turkey or opening presents? That's just brutal man, I can't even imagine. You're sitting there passing the mashed potatoes and suddenly there's a flood in the basement, what a nightmare. And he had the yearly inspections going on, paid for that maintenance plan every year, and the thing still waited for the worst possible moment to give up. I mean you'd think those inspections would at least find something, a little rust, a weird noise, something you know? But nope, just goes out like a bomb on cue. That's the kind of luck that makes you want to just give up on maintenance plans entirely.
