I was at a meetup last week and someone called Death Note a battle shonen because there's a mental showdown, and I had to walk away. When did people forget that genres have actual definitions, not just vibes?

Three years ago I called a cooking show a sports anime and still can't show my face at that friend's house.

@ray_king Actually that take is completely defensible. Competition shows with high stakes and dramatic music are basically sports. Cooking shows have brackets, rivalries, and commentary just like basketball.
