TIL my favorite brush cleaner ruined my sable brushes after 8 years

I grabbed my trusty Windsor & Newton series 7 brush last week and the bristles just crumbled off. Turns out the cheap brush cleaner I'd been using since 2016 had some ingredient that slowly ate the glue over time. Anyone know a good alternative that won't wreck your brushes after a few years?

Always figured it was just wear and tear, but @bethcarr makes a good point about the paint residue.

People always blame the cleaner but nobody talks about how the paint itself holds solvent that breaks down the glue over time. Your brush cleaner might not even be the main culprit, it could be the leftover paint residue you never fully removed. I switched to Master's Brush Cleaner and it works fine but I also started rinsing with a little isopropyl alcohol once a month to get rid of any dried paint deep in the ferrule. Your brushes lasted 8 years man that's honestly a good run for any brush you use hard. Most of my sable brushes start getting loose after 5-6 years no matter what I clean them with.
