Had to pick between a 2-stage paint job and fixing the broken frame rail first
Last month I took on a 1992 F-150 that needed both bodywork and a proper re-spray. My customer only had $3,200 to spend, so I had to choose between making the cab look mint with a 2-stage urethane job or cutting out the rusted frame rail near the rear shackle and welding in a new section. I went with the frame rail because I figured a shiny truck that snaps in half is worthless. Took me 6 days with the cab off and about $900 in steel and mig wire. Now the truck drives straight, but the paint still looks like a checkerboard of primer and faded red. Has anyone else had to explain to a customer why structural work beats cosmetics?
Man I feel your pain. I once spent a whole weekend welding in new floor pans on a rust bucket while the owner kept eyeballing the dented fender like I was the one who hit it. Good on you for doing the boring, responsible thing though. A pretty truck that folds up in a driveway is just an expensive lawn ornament.
