Overheard a new guy say "just twist the wires together" on a 737 last week

You said "non critical system" and that's kind of the problem. In aviation, there's no such thing as a truly non critical system when it comes to wire splices. Even a cabin lighting circuit can short out and take down something more important if the twist isn't done right. I've seen a bad splice on an entertainment system cause smoke in the cockpit once. The FAA rulebook is pretty clear: twisted splices are only okay as a temporary repair in a real jam, and you still have to log it and fix it proper within a certain number of flight hours.

Hated seeing that at first, figured he was just some cowboy who didn't care about safety or quality. Honestly changed my mind after I watched him do it on a non critical system and seal it up properly. Ngl there's a time and place for a good twist and tape job if you're in a real jam, not on flight controls or hydraulics though. Tbh I still prefer a proper splice but I've softened on the whole thing since then.
