Got caught in a flash flood on the Escalante River route last spring

Was hiking the lower section near Coyote Gulch. Blue sky turned dark in maybe 20 minutes. Water rose from ankle deep to chest high so fast we had to scramble up a side canyon. Spent a cold night on a sandstone ledge with half our gear soaked. My old weather radio was useless, no signal down there. Now I carry a satellite messenger and check the forecast for the whole drainage, not just the trailhead. Anyone else have a close call that changed their gear or planning for desert hikes?
