The guy at my farmers market booth in Tulsa asked if my sourdough was "angry" and I still think about it
So two Saturdays ago I'm set up at the Cherry Street farmers market in Tulsa, right, and this older dude in a straw hat picks up a loaf of my country sourdough and just holds it to his ear like it's a phone. Then he goes, "This one's angry. You can hear it." I laughed it off and sold him the loaf, but he came back 20 minutes later with a photo on his phone of his own starter, which he keeps in a 5 gallon bucket on his porch in Broken Arrow. He swears his starter "sulks" if he skips a feeding and "sings" when it's happy, and he claims he can tell the difference by the smell, like a yeasty gym sock versus a yeasty flower. I have baked for 11 years and never once thought about a starter having a mood, but now every time I feed mine at 6am I'm listening for something. Anybody else got weird old timer starter wisdom like this, or is it just a Tulsa thing?

Old timers talk about their tools and hobbies like they're alive because they spend enough time with them to notice the small stuff. My grandpa swore his truck "ran better after a compliment" and I always laughed, but maybe he was just paying closer attention than the rest of us.
