Honestly thought those self watering pots were just a gimmick

My sister gave me a couple for my birthday last year and I was sure they'd drown my herbs. Tried one with basil in a 10 inch pot on my south facing balcony. After two months, the plant was twice the size of the one in my regular pot. The reservoir really does stop the soil from drying out in the summer heat. Has anyone else had a good or bad run with these things?

What size pot did you use for the basil? I've found they work best with smaller plants in bigger pots, gives the roots room to breathe. The only time I had a plant rot was when I used a tiny pot and kept the reservoir totally full. Now I let the reservoir go dry for a day or two before I refill it, seems to work way better.

My friend killed her mint with one, but @olivia_webb's neglect trick saved my own.

Seriously, markm27 is onto something with letting the reservoir dry out. It's like how my phone battery lasts longer if I don't charge it to 100% all the time. The best tools need a little neglect to actually work right.
