Why does nobody talk about using a smaller guard for the crown area?

I was struggling for months with bulkiness around the crown on my fades until a barber in Columbus named Mike told me to drop down one guard size just for that spot. It made the blend so much smoother and cut my adjustment time in half. Has anyone else tried this approach or do you have a different method for that tricky area?

Doesn't that cause a harsh line if your fade isn't perfectly level there?

Only if you're doing it mid-conversation at the barber shop like me, @coleman.jamie. I tried that once and ended up looking like I had a crop circle on my head.
