Investing hours in something that just doesn't pay off" hits the nail on the head. But what gets me is that these crime dramas often rely on big twists that feel totally unearned. The first few episodes build up this super complex web of clues, and then the ending just handwaves it all away with some lazy explanation. It's like the writers ran out of steam and forgot they were supposed to tie everything together in a satisfying way. That's way worse than just a boring show, because it tricks you into thinking there's a payoff coming.
