Rant: Why I finally stopped using oil on air tools

I used to put a few drops of oil in my air ratchet every morning, thought that was just how it's done. Then last week a 20-year veteran at the hangar told me modern tool seals are dry-lube from the factory and oil just attracts dirt and grit. He showed me the inside of his 3-year-old Snap-on that never saw a drop of oil, and it was cleaner than mine after 6 months. Anyone else been warned off this by an old timer?

Met a guy named Ray on a job in Tulsa back in 2017. He told me to wet cure for 14 days minimum or the slab would dust forever. I followed his advice for years. But then I did a 3000 square foot warehouse floor with a curing compound instead. Three years later, zero dust issues. Ray was wrong. Has anyone else dumped old rules that turned out to be nonsense?

Had a week where every repair went sideways on me

Three days straight, I was fighting a 2015 Silverado rear quarter panel that just wouldn't line up no matter how many times I pulled it. Then a Honda Civic came in with a dent the size of a dinner plate that turned into a full replacement when I found rust hiding underneath. Anyone else ever have a stretch where it feels like the cars are ganging up on you?

So I've been playing through It Takes Two with my girlfriend, and about 4 hours in I noticed she was hanging back during every treasure chest section and let me grab everything first. I thought she was just being nice or spacing out. Then we hit that one level with the vacuum cleaner where you need to split resources evenly to progress, and she just stood there waiting for me to hand stuff over. It hit me like a truck - I'd been treating couch co-op like a single player game where I'm the main character. I was always the one grabbing the upgrade first, picking the dialogue options, solving puzzles before she could even look at them. She finally called me out and said I was making her feel like an NPC in her own game session with me. Now I'm wondering how many other people out there are the bossy co-op player without realizing it. Has anyone else had that moment where a partner or friend made you see how selfish you were being during shared play?

That $5 thrift store desk I almost passed up... now I get it

I walked right by this beat-up oak desk at Goodwill last month because it had a huge water ring and peeling veneer. Then my neighbor Karen showed me a picture of her own desk that looked just as bad before she sanded it down. She used a $12 can of Restor-A-Finish and some 0000 steel wool, and it came out looking like a $300 piece. I grabbed the desk, spent about 2 hours on it last Saturday, and the difference is crazy... the water ring is totally gone. Has anyone else had good luck with that Restor-A-Finish stuff on older furniture?

Guy at the bike shop told me to skip the chain lube every week...

So last month this mechanic at REI in Portland said I only needed to lube my chain once a month. I went with it because he seemed confident. After three weeks my chain started squeaking so bad I could hear it from half a block away. By week four I had rust spots and had to replace a $35 chain. Now I'm back to lubing every 100 miles like I used to and it's fine. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a shop employee that cost you money?

Why nobody talks about using a level on the crane hook

I was setting steel on a job in Portland last month and kept having trouble getting the beams to sit square. After three tries on one column, I took a 4-foot level out of my truck and clamped it to the hook block. It showed me the hook was actually tilted about 2 degrees to the left. Once I adjusted the boom angle to get the block level, the beam came down flat on the first try. Has anyone else dealt with a crooked hook causing fit-up issues?

Hit 12 straight episodes of a show in one night and felt weird about it

Last Saturday, I started watching Slow Horses on Apple TV around 8 PM. I figured I'd watch 2 or 3 episodes, but before I knew it, it was 4 AM and I had finished the entire first season. That's 12 episodes in one sitting, no breaks for snacks or bathroom. It made me realize how a show's pacing and cliffhangers can trap you way harder than you expect. Has anyone else had a show just take over your whole night like that?
