My neighbor told me my bean soup was bland and it made me rethink spices

I make a big pot of bean soup every Sunday to save money, using dry beans and cheap veggies. My neighbor tried some last week and said, 'It's filling, but it needs more than just salt and pepper.' She gave me a small bag of her smoked paprika. I added a teaspoon to the next batch, and it totally changed the flavor for maybe 50 cents more. Now I look for one strong spice like cumin or chili powder to add depth without buying a bunch. Has anyone else found a cheap spice that makes a big difference in simple meals?

That smoked paprika trick is a game changer. Read an article once that called it a "flavor shortcut" for pantry cooking. A little really does go a long way.

Cinnamon in chili is a hard pass for me. It just makes the whole pot taste like a weird dessert. I stick to smoked paprika too, or sometimes a good hit of garlic powder if I'm really broke. That's all you need to fix a bland soup.

My buddy swears by a pinch of cinnamon in his chili, which sounded weird but actually works.
