PSA: My cheap bag of rice from the discount store had a big problem

Last month I bought a 20-pound bag of generic long-grain rice for $8 at a local discount grocery. When I opened it to make dinner last week, I found a bunch of tiny black bugs moving around inside the bag. Has anyone else had this happen with bulk dry goods, and what's the best way to check for it before buying?

Used to just grab the cheapest bag without a second look. Found weevils in my pantry once and it totally changed my routine. Now I hold those clear plastic bags up to the light and look for any tiny dark spots moving around. If the bag feels at all warm, that's a bad sign too. I'll even give it a little shake to see if any dust or bugs fall to the bottom. It's worth the extra minute to check.

Ugh, @thomas.mark that's smart. I read somewhere that freezing flour for a couple days kills any eggs before they hatch.

But what if the flour already has bugs in it when you freeze it? Freezing might stop eggs from hatching, but it doesn't get rid of the bugs that are already there. I feel like @viola263's method gives a false sense of safety. You could still end up with dead weevils in your flour, which is just as gross. Honestly, the visual check that thomas.mark does seems way more reliable to me.
