Tried store-bought vinyl vs a custom cut decal... huge difference in quality

I made two bumper stickers for a family reunion last month, one using a cheap Cricut knockoff vinyl from Hobby Lobby and the other from a local print shop near downtown. The print shop's decal cost me $12 but it's still stuck perfectly through rain and car washes, while the Hobby Lobby one peeled off at the edges after 3 days. Has anyone else noticed how much longer professional cut vinyl lasts compared to the DIY sheets?

That "peeling off after 3 days" thing is EXACTLY what happened to me with the craft store vinyl. @troy_sanchez8 nailed it about the adhesive being weak. I learned the hard way when I made a decal for my cooler and it looked like garbage after one trip to the beach. The pro shops use a different kind of material that actually shrinks and moves with the surface, while the cheap stuff just sits on top and lets go over time. If you're only making something for a weekend event, the hobby vinyl is fine, but for anything you want to last through a single summer, it's worth paying the extra few bucks for the good stuff.

Cricut vinyl is basically just calendared vinyl with a weak adhesive. The print shops use cast vinyl with a high-tack adhesive that actually bonds to the paint. I bought a roll of Oracal 651 from a sign supply place and it held up for 3 years on my truck before I sold it. The cheap stuff from craft stores is usually rated for 1-2 years outdoors but it fails way sooner if you live somewhere with real weather. If you're set on doing it yourself, at least get Oracal or Avery brand vinyl from a proper supplier instead of the hobby store junk. It costs about the same per foot when you buy a roll and you won't be reapplying it every few months.
