Shoutout to the electrician in Tucson who said my zip tie habit was a fire hazard
I had every cable under my desk cinched tight with zip ties about every 3 inches, and he pointed out that if a cable gets hot it has no room to breathe or move, which is a real risk. Now I use velcro straps with slack and honestly it looks a bit messier, so I keep going back and forth on whether a clean look is worth the safety trade. Do you all keep your bundles loose for heat reasons, or is tight and tidy fine in your book?
Three inches apart is wild. That's not cable management, that's basically strapping a heater shut. I get wanting the clean look, but heat has to go somewhere and a tight bundle just traps it in the middle where you can't see it. The messy velcro thing bugs me too, but a fire is a lot messier than some slack in your cables. I'd leave the velcro loose and stop worrying about how it looks under a desk nobody sees.
