My old boss told me to never touch a Contax G2 rangefinder myself

He said the focus coupling was a nightmare and to just send them out. Honestly, I got a G2 in last week and thought, how bad could it be? Tbh, it took me three hours just to get the top plate off without breaking a ribbon cable. I had the whole thing apart on my bench in Austin and realized he was totally right. Anyone else ever get stubborn with a camera they were warned about?

Yeah, that "well earned reputation" line is spot on. My buddy had the same stubborn moment with a Hasselblad 500C/M film back and ended up with a box of tiny springs he could never put back.

Oh man, I was the SAME way. I used to think those warnings were just for people who weren't careful enough. I learned the hard way on an old Nikon FE mirror box. Got it all apart and could NOT get the timing right for the life of me. It totally changed my mind about which cameras I'll even try to fix now. Some gear just has a well earned reputation.

Totally get where you're coming from, @rubyreed. My own moment of truth was with a Canon AE-1 shutter. Took the curtain assembly out thinking I could clean it, and the whole thing just fell apart in my hands. Springs and tiny levers everywhere. Never did get it back together.
