Shoutout to the 6-year-old who made me rethink box forts

My nephew built a castle out of a single fridge box at his birthday party in Tulsa last month and I laughed at first. Then he cut a window flap and used a paper towel roll as a cannon and it just worked. I've been making box furniture for 3 years now and always went for big, complicated designs with tape and glue. Watching him make something strong with just folds and notches changed my mind about the whole thing. I spent 4 hours last weekend on a shelf that fell apart, he spent 15 minutes on a tower that held his weight. Why do we overbuild everything when simple folds do the job better? Has anyone else gone simpler after watching a kid do it?

Funny, that "simple folds do the job better" part got me. But the shelf fell apart because you rushed it in 4 hours, not because it was complicated. Kids make stuff that works for five minutes, and yeah it's cute, but it won't hold books next month. I've seen too many "clever" single-fold builds collapse the second you put real weight on them.

Man, you just reminded me of the time I built a "genius" folding stool out of plywood and hinges. Took me a whole weekend, not four hours, and it still buckled the first time I sat on it with a bag of groceries. My neighbor's kid built a cardboard castle that same day and it outlasted my stool by like a month. Weird how sometimes the dumb simple stuff wins because it doesn't pretend to be more than it is. But yeah, you're right, rushing is the real killer, not the design.
