I don't always recommend chimney caps, and it's causing arguments

I've put caps on for years, but now I see they can make things worse. In some cases, caps keep wetness in and speed up rust in the flue. I look at each chimney on its own before saying to add a cap. My work buddy says I'm not thinking about safety, but I focus on good air flow. Have you had this happen?

What specific signs tell you a cap would trap moisture?

Arguments like this are so frustrating. Maybe it's just me, but your airflow focus makes a lot of sense.

What makes these debates so hard to move forward? I totally feel your frustration when good points get ignored. Your take on airflow is correct because it affects everything else in the setup. It's surprising how often that basic idea gets lost in the noise. Keep pointing it out, even if it feels like you're the only one who sees it.
