Saw a clever coolant filter setup at a shop in Tacoma
They used a cheap plastic colander from a dollar store inside their main tank to catch chips before the pump. Anyone rig something similar to save on filter costs?

Yeah, the plastic getting brittle thing @rayc38 mentioned is a real problem. Reminds me of this time my uncle tried to fix a leaky garden hose with one of those cheap dollar store funnels, left it out in the sun for a few days. Came back and it just crumbled in his hand, little bits of plastic everywhere in the grass. Makes you wonder what that coolant is really doing to everything else in the system.

Buddy of mine tried that with a kitchen strainer, said it worked okay for a week. Then the plastic got brittle from the coolant and shattered into a bunch of tiny pieces. Had to shut the whole machine down to fish them all out.

Oh man, that plastic colander thing sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. A buddy of mine tried this with a cheap plastic strainer from the grocery store, it held up for like a week and a half before the coolant made it get all brittle and crack. He spent the whole next morning picking shards out of his pump.
