My buddy in Austin told me to work from a library instead of a cafe for big tasks.
Tried it for a client report last Tuesday and the silence was actually worse, I missed the background hum. Anyone else find total quiet weirdly distracting?

Totally get that. I wonder if it's about feeling alone with your thoughts. Like @hill.hugo said, it's its own noise, but maybe it's the kind that makes you hear your own brain too much.
