Honestly seems like a lot of work for fifteen bucks. I mean idk maybe it's just me but I'd probably just get the new ones and not deal with the hassle. Fixing stuff always sounds good until you're covered in tiny screws and glue.

See, I've actually had the opposite happen. Grabbed a tip about using paste wax on plane soles from an old guy at the store. Changed everything. Stopped sticking cold. I guess it depends on the person giving it. Some folks just repeat stuff they heard.
