Warning: don't drop $300 on a first print run of a comic you haven't read yet

I spent like $300 on a first print of an indie comic last month because the cover looked sick and I saw some hype online lol. Didn't even flip through it first. Turns out the writing was real bad and the story made no sense at all. Now I'm stuck with a book I can't even sell for half what I paid. Anyone else bought into the hype on a grail and regretted it? How do you avoid this trap?

Buy the writing first and the art second. A $300 gamble on unknown writing is just gambling.

Good art can't save a bad story, @jake_hall88.
