Noticed a strange detail in the new library downtown
I was at the new library on Elm Street yesterday to check out their community room for a client meeting. The custom millwork around the main desk is beautiful, but I saw the contractor used a clear silicone caulk on stained oak trim. It's already yellowing after just two months. I've always used a stainable wood filler for that kind of joinery. Has anyone else run into this on a public bid job where the specs called for the wrong material?

Wait, clear silicone on stained oak? That's a head scratcher. Julia92 is right, it's going to look awful in a year. I've seen that yellowing happen in a few months on a sunny windowsill.

Ugh, total rookie move.

Can't believe they used clear silicone on stained oak. That stuff always yellows, especially in a spot with any light. It looks terrible now and will only get worse. A decent stainable filler would have disappeared into the wood grain.
