My old boss swore foils always beat balayage for fine hair, and I bought it for 3 years
When I was fresh out of school working at a salon in Rochester, the owner told me fine hair never holds balayage and that foils were the only way to get lift without wrecking it. I believed her because she had 20 years on me, so I foiled every fine-haired client who walked in for 3 years straight. Then a new girl started renting the chair next to me and she painted a level 6 client with the thinnest little slices, and the grow out was gorgeous. I finally tried it myself on a regular who had been getting foiled every 8 weeks, and she came back 4 months later with no banding at all. The thing is, my old boss wasn't lying about her own hands. She just laid the product on too thick, so of course it bled and looked muddy on fine hair. I'm not saying foils are dead, but I wasted so much time on a rule that was really just one person's habit. Has anyone else had a mentor hand them a hard rule that fell apart once you watched somebody else do it?

Wow, my mentor told me redheads can't go blonde and I believed that for years too!
