Question about mixing direct dyes with conditioner

I was watching a tutorial from a stylist in Portland last night and she said adding a squirt of conditioner to semi-permanent color actually messes with the staining power. I always thought it just diluted it evenly... has anyone else had their color turn out patchy from doing this?

That Portland stylist is right, conditioner coats the hair and blocks the dye from sticking.
