I finally looked up the actual cost of building a stone wall the old way vs buying fake stone veneer

Found out from a stone mason forum that a proper dry stone wall costs about $25 per square foot in materials alone while the fake stuff from the box store runs $8 but needs concrete backing and special tools, so which is really more cottagecore when you factor in the plastic mesh and mortar bags?

$25 per square foot just for the rocks? I'd need to take out a mortgage to build a decent garden wall.

My neighbor spent $600 on river rocks for a 4x6 patch last spring. Now they just sit there collecting leaves and pine needles. Honestly, crushed gravel would cost half that and you can actually walk on it.
